Editor’s note: Nominations for the 2022-2023 ISACA Board of Directors are open from now through 31 January 2022. Find out more information on how to be considered here.
There’s a saying when it comes to what makes an effective board of directors: Noses in, fingers out.
That’s the approach the ISACA Board of Directors takes, meaning the Board is responsible for governance and oversight for the organization, but we steer clear of the operational execution. ISACA has excellent leadership under CEO David Samuelson, who manages a talented staff team that executes on initiatives ranging from the credentials that ISACA offers, to putting on world-class learning events, to building a strong network among our 150,000+ members and over 220 chapters, to creating a vast range of volunteer opportunities, and so much more. The staff team does great work in these areas, and the Board is careful to provide the needed space for them to work their magic.
That’s not to say that the Board does not have an important role to play. Composed of executive leaders from technology and business functions at organizations, as well as ISACA members with deep knowledge of the association and our community, ISACA’s Board provides balanced oversight in the interests of ISACA’s stakeholders of members, chapters, partners, credential-holders, learners and enterprise customers. The Board assures the growth of ISACA’s professional community worldwide and, significantly, oversees ISACA’s financial stability.
That only can happen at a high level with dedicated, high-caliber Board directors, and right now, we’re on the lookout for prospective new Board members. So, who exactly are we looking for?
- People with strong executive and/or chapter leadership experience
- People with experience on other boards of directors
- People who are passionate about ISACA and its future growth and global impact
- People who appreciate the opportunity to give back to the profession (and are not only interested in additional recognition for their CVs)
- Global representation — ISACA is a diverse, global organization, and our Board reflects that
If you meet some of the above criteria — you don’t have to tick every box in the above list — please seriously consider going through the nomination process. For those interested in board service, ISACA is a great board to join because of how meaningful this organization is for technology professionals and their organizations around the world. ISACA is a member-focused organization. We have more than 50 years of industry leadership and credibility behind us, but we never lose sight of how we can best serve our global community in the future.
If board service intrigues you, please give it a shot, but also keep in mind how many additional opportunities are available through ISACA. While we have limited slots on our global Board each nomination cycle, ISACA offers so many leadership opportunities, including at the chapter board level, which can be a great avenue to make an impact as well as to potentially prepare somebody to later serve on the global Board. You can find some of our volunteer opportunities here. Serving on the boards of other non-profit or for-profit organizations can also provide valuable growth opportunities and prepare you to serve on the ISACA Board.
As a longtime ISACA volunteer, board director and past board chair, I have seen first-hand how meaningful this organization is in people’s lives. Consider putting your name forward for the Board and helping ISACA make an even stronger global impact in the years to come. And if you know someone you think would be a good candidate for the Board, please consider nominating that person.
