IT auditors are positioned to play a key part in helping organizations strengthen digital trust.

In the latest episode of ISACA Live, Robin Lyons, ISACA’s IT audit professional practices principal, said that, from an audit perspective, digital trust is confidence in the integrity of the security and privacy controls that organizations have in place, as well as trust in the people who are involved in minimizing delays or obstacles to organizational objectives.

“IT auditors have always been in the business of looking at practices from an objective perspective and working with organizations if there are potential pitfalls to what an organization wants to do from an innovative perspective,” Lyons said. “Auditors can absolutely contribute that to the digital trust framework.”

Creating digital trust is essential for organizations to successfully innovate, in part to inspire confidence in any partners and vendors with which they work.

“As organizations try new things, IT auditors are in a perfect position not just to provide the perspective of whether or not controls are effective or adequate, but they’re also able to work in a consultative role as new processes are being rolled out or as existing processes are being modified so that the organization can have confidence in what it is doing,” Lyons said.

Digital ethics are a key component of digital trust, and Lyons said auditors are equipped to determine whether companies are doing anything unethical or unwise with customer data.

Additionally, as supply chain relationships become increasingly top of mind for organizations, Lyons said that auditors can “follow the technology” to help provide assurance over organizations’ supply chain relationships.
